Brief Summary of The picture of Dorian Gray by OSCAR WILDE
This story is profoundly allegorical: Its a 19th-century version of the myth of Faust, the story of a man who sells his soul to the devil so that all his desires may be satisfied.
One of the most important source of inspiration was The temptation of Saint Antony” by Flaubert
This soul becomes the picture, that records the signs of experience, the corruption the horror and the sins concealed under the mask of Dorians beauty and youth.
The picture isnt autonomous: it stands for the dark, evil side of Dorians personality. His double, which he tries to forget by locking the picture in a room.
The moral is that every excess must be punished and reality cannot be escaped; when Dorian destroys the picture, he cannot avoid the punishment for all his sins, that is, death.
Relazione in Italiano
Questa storia è profondamente allegorica: è una versione ottocentesca del mito di Faust, la storia di un uomo che vende la sua anima al diavolo affinché tutti i suoi desideri possano essere soddisfatti.
Una delle più importanti fonti di ispirazione è stata La tentazione di Sant’Antonio” di Flaubert
Quest’anima diventa l’immagine, che registra i segni dell’esperienza, la corruzione, l’orrore ei peccati nascosti sotto la maschera della bellezza e della giovinezza di Dorian.
L’immagine non è autonoma: rappresenta il lato oscuro e malvagio della personalità di Dorian. Il suo doppio, che cerca di dimenticare chiudendo a chiave il quadro in una stanza.
La morale è che ogni eccesso va punito e la realtà non può essere elusa; quando Dorian distrugge il quadro, non può evitare la punizione per tutti i suoi peccati, cioè la morte.
